This write-up deals with the measures that should be taken when a young child uses foul language and/or curses.
Firstly, you should know that in a majority of the situations, young children often do not know the literal meaning of the foul language that they use.
There is no dearth of foul language being used on the TV, in video games, in music, and even when it comes to adults communicating in the presence of children.
Really, with the casualness that a lot of people spurt out foul language, it shouldn’t be such a surprise to hear a young child cursing.
Children are prone to repeating what they hear, and this mimicking is often done without understanding the meaning of what is being said.
For instance, when my little sister was in the 5th grade, she happened to say aloud a bad word in class which fell upon her teacher’s ear. The teacher was fuming and my sister was sent to detention.
The teacher was absolutely livid, and wanted my sister out of the school. Her case was that no child could curse in her class.
When my parents got around to discussing this calmly with my sister, they learned that my sister had absolutely no idea about what the word actually meant. Her understanding of the word was nowhere close to being right.
This aspect was overlooked by her teacher, and it almost resulted in my sister being reprimanded for a mistake that she actually did not commit knowingly.

Your child cursing could also be along similar lines. There are many occasions when young kids don’t know the meaning of the words they use. They are constantly hearing things on the TV, through music, through movies, etc. They continue to hear a barrage of words whose meaning they do not comprehend.
However, they do notice that these words are used in anger or frustration, and therefore, when they get angry or frustrated, they use those very words. This is simply because they associate these words with being used in anger and frustration.
This is why it is important for you to know if your child actually understands the meaning of the words he uses. Even in situations where children do know of the meanings, they should casually be told that using foul language is simply not acceptable.
You do not have to get angry, flustered, or upset. Young children often do not understand the meaning of the foul language that they use.
Older children on the other hand, need to be handled in a different manner.
You should remember that in situations where you have a young child cursing, he mostly does not know what is actually being said. In situations such as these, you should try and identify where the child is picking up such language from.
It could be as simple as you watching a movie after your child goes to bed in the next room. If he can hear the TV, it registers in his subconscious, which is a very powerful thing.
You should also remember that when children use curse words, they probably do not realize the weight of what is being said. This simply calls for you telling them amicably that using this kind of language is not appreciated.
You should make a habit of repeating and enforcing this until your child understands that using bad language is not acceptable.
Another thing that needs to be mentioned is that children often use the language that those around them do, and this also includes the children’s parents. In wanting your child to speak to you respectfully, you should show them respect while talking to them, and also to others.
Know that you are a role model to your child. If you end up using foul language in the presence of your child, you can expect your child to use the same language. If your child does not use this language at home, he/she probably does so once outside. You should know that controlling what you say is also important.
A recent survey showed that 90% parents use bad language in presence of their children, something that is quite shameful. Parents need to exercise restraint, and should serve as models whose behavior can be copied with negative implications.
Keep these parenting tips in mind, exercise restraint, and do not get offended if your children use foul language and/or curse words. Simply tell them that this isn’t acceptable, and understand that they probably don’t even know what they’re saying.
