Seven Mistakes that Can Cost You a Lot

Getting money for college through student loans, education loans or even federal student grants or private grants for college is something that is not very hard to do.  In practice however it is something that can be very hard to do.

It is not because there is no money available.  There is literally billions of dollars available to help you send your child to college.

However, the process of applying for student loans and grants, though not difficult, can be quite tedious.  There are a lot of detailed forms to fill out and a lot of mistakes that you can make upon the way.

In this series we are going to discuss seven of the common pitfalls parents fall into when trying to get money for school for their children.

Mistake #1 - Missing the Deadlines

In theory it should not be that hard getting money for college. All you need to do is fill out a few forms, send them in and the student loan and grant organizations that are there to help you should process them quickly and get you the money that you deserve and need.

Unfortunately, it is not always that simple. It is not because there isn’t plenty of money for school. There is literally billions of dollars available to help children go to college. College grants and loans are abundant and readily available.

However, what parents fail to realize is that every state, every local organization, every college and university, and every private funding source has their own application process and their own particular deadline. So while the federal student grants might be in June, the school loan application might be due in February, your state application might be due in January, and there might be other applications that are due even in the fall of the senior year.

You need to be quite organized and make sure you know what you are applying for and know which applications are applicable to you and make sure you get all the forms done on time and in to the organization that is funding the college education for you.

This all makes sense right? It shouldn’t be hard to do. All it requires is organization, but unfortunately it is more complicated than that. Here is why.

There are organizations that give college loans and grants that do not wait until all the applications are in before they start processing applications. They start evaluating applications and recipients as soon as the applications start coming in. What that means to you is if you just get your application in by the deadline, some or a large portion of the money the organization has to give for student loans or grants has already been used up by other students who got in earlier.

This means that it may be quite possible that your child truly deserves and qualifies for a student loan, but even if he got his application in on time, he still may be too late to get funding because the money has been used up already. So it is not just enough to get your application in before the deadline, you need to get your application in to every funding source as early as possible to maximize your child’s chance of getting the funding for education that he deserves and needs.

In summary, you need to know the deadline of every education student loan or grant for college that you are applying for. But more than that, you need to get your applications in as early as possible, usually soon after they start taking applications. This will maximize your child’s chances of getting the funding for college and money for school that he needs and deserves.

Making the deadlines for loans is an obstacle that parents sometimes face. However, it is one of the easiest things to take care of. The other obstacles that we are going to talk about are a little more complicated. Remember we are talking about a lot of money when we are talking about college.

An education for your child will cost between $100-250,000 for a four-year program and that is money that most people do not make every year. It is money that is the same as the cost of a house for most people. You need to take care and take the process of applying for money for college seriously. As seriously as you take a career because that is how much money we are talking about.

My best advice is not to do this yourself. There are numerous things that can go wrong along the way and any mistake can cost you thousands of dollars. My advice is to get a professional college planner to help you with the process.

I have arranged for you to have an evaluation and a free consultation with the leading college planner in the country.
